Top 10 Shocking Celebrity Breakups

Celebrity relationships and breakups have become part of the Hollywood culture for the longest time ever. We used to hear about the divorces in tabloid magazines, but with gossip sites, Facebook, Twitter and smartphones, this news is now more open to the public. People just can’t seem to “mind their own business”. Here are the top ten most shocking celebrity break ups.

10.Jon & Kate Gosselin

Jon and Kate Gosselin. Anyone who watched the first few episodes of “Jon and Kate Plus 8″ realizes that the problems were always there. Sure, people surmised that Jon wasn’t happy because of the bickering and Kate’s refusal to allow him to have a voice, but it was still heart-breaking to watch their family fall apart right before our eyes. All of Jon’s cheating and Ed Hardy-fueled grossness has made Kate a victim of adultery, so we’ll have to see if Jon’s attempt to slow the divorce will help him “regain control over the future” of his family. During a group therapy session with TV therapist Dr. Jenn Berman, Jon Gosselin stated, “My marriage was very non-affectionate. It was just kind of like ten years of a business transaction.” He also  denied that he had wrecked the marriage by having an affair, implying it was broken long before he cheated.

9. Barbie & Ken

In 2004, it was announced that after 43 years together, Barbie and Ken were splitting up and there might be an Australian boogie boarder named Blaine to blame. The couple’s business manager Russell Arons pointed fingers “reluctance on Ken’s part to make their union official,” but apparently the couple parted on the bestest of terms possible. They had no comment. Obviously.  Seriously?! As if it doesn’t suck enough to be young these days. In 2013, Two models, who take pride in looking like real-life Barbie and Ken dolls, met for the first time – but it wasn’t love at first sight. They cannot stand the sight on each other – especially because of his remarks about her looking like a drag queen.

8. Al & Tipper Gord

I don’t think anyone could’ve predicted this one. When Al and Tipper Gore announced that they planned to divorce after a whopping forty years of marriage, I’m quite certain everyone was shocked. While the announcement didn’t get the press many of the other splits on this list did, it was, in my opinion at least, the most shocking split involving any public figure I’ve ever heard of. Close friends say that infidelity was not a factor  in the couple’s decision to divorce. It wouldn’t surprise many people if it turned out that either of the two had strayed. Instances of celebrity infidelity are very popular in today’s society – it’s an epidemic. Is it possible that we hope one of them cheated because it would make this situation much easier to take in? Perhaps! It’s also probably that after 40 years of kids, marriage, career in politics and, well, life, the Gores just grew apart. In a Time Magazine article, Belinda Luscombe argued that that “it may be that they had been so busy that they grew apart and the chasm was too wide to bridge.”

7. Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones

After 13 years of marriage, this hottest couple decided to spend separate. They reportedly drifted apart while Douglas was undergoing treatment for throat cancer, and Jones was dealing with issues of depression and anxiety-Bipolar Disorder. The couple haven’t filed for divorce yet, and have two children together, so there is still hope for a reconciliation. The age difference is working against them.

6. George Clooney and Stacy Kiebler

Just when the whole world was getting used to seeing wrestler Stacy Kiebler by George Clooney’s side, the two announced that they were breaking up after being together for two years. They said their schedules made the relationship difficult to maintain, and will remain good friends.

5. Clint and Dina Eastwood

For decades, Dina and Clint Eastwood lived away from the glare of Hollywood. The former TV anchor and the Oscar-winning screen legend, married since 1996, were  the quietest couple, living their secluded life in the seaside hamlet of Carmel, Calif.  Now that union has exploded in hurt feelings on both sides in a highly publicized split that has Dina and the infamously private Clint now respectively dating former spouses Scott and Erica Fisher. According to multiple sources, the marriage started to become rocky when Dina did the Mrs. Eastwood and Company. The show, which averaged around 1 million viewers per episode, featured Dina, daughters Morgan and Francesca Eastwood (Clint’s daughter with actress Frances Fisher), and Overtone. I guess Clint never approved of the show.

4. Josh Brolin and Diane Lane

They met through Barbara Streisand, who was Brolin’s step mother in 2002, and had been married since 2004. They have had a hard relationship that was not very smooth from the beginning, with Brolin getting arrested for a domestic dispute when the police were called to their home a few months after they got wed. Brolin has had other legal problems, which were alcohol related. They finally decided to separate in early 2013, and finalized their divorce by November of the same year. The reason for the split was that “the relationship just ran its course.” They both have children from previous relationships, but none while together. As for Brolin, the “No Country for Old Men” actor checked himself into rehab a month before the marriage was finalized. Diane restored her name back to Lane.

3. Orlando Bloom and Miranda Kerr

One of Hollywood’s more popular celebrity coupled in Hollywood decided to end their six year relationship and three year marriage just last fall. The actor/model  couple have a 2 year old son, and have said they are divorcing on good terms, and will remain friends. They will remain important parts of each other’s life and try to assist each other, especially when it comes to the welfare of their son. It is unknown if the couple have officially filed divorce papers, but they aren’t expected to get back together anytime soon. Days after they announced their split Orlando, 36, aired on TV to declare he would always love the supermodel. So why split? Will we ever figure out?

2. Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart

This split broke the hearts of a lot of Twilight fans, depending on if they were on team Edward or team Jacob. The two became an item while filming the Twilight trilogy, and quickly became one of Hollywood’s favorite young couples and paparazzi targets. The relationship became serious and they moved in together sparking rumors of an engagement, but it all started falling apart when the paparazzi took pictures of Stewart meeting privately and kissing the director of her movie “Snow White and The Huntsman.” The pair broke up after that, but temporarily got back together before finally calling it quits. The couple has moved on from the relationship, but some Twilight fans are still holding out hope for a reunion.

1. Jason Segel and Michelle Williams

This split, between How I Met Your Mother Star and actress Michelle Williams (former girlfriend of Heath Ledger), was the BIGGEST SHOCKER because it was one of the relationships that everyone thought would last – like Rhea Perlman and Danny Diveto. The pair kept their relationship out of the public eye for the longest time, which was refreshing to see since some couples get together just to make headlines, create some buzz for their movies, or to keep their names in the news. The relationship suffered because Williams wanted to raise her daughter from her relationship with late actor Heath Ledger in New York, and Segel was based in Los Angeles where he is doing his television show. Williams also wasn’t ready to commit to a long term relationship, which made them decide it would be better if they ended the relationship. Soon after Jason Siegel checked himself into Alcoholics Anonymous in a desperate bid to win his battle with booze. He was heartbroken!
